State of the art system used to light Wellington’s International Terminal

Mainzeal Property and Construction Ltd is the main contractor for the Wellington International Terminal redevelopment, which includes the new arrivals hall and new hardstands (parking) for aircraft at the terminal’s passenger gates.

The development of the new hardstands for the international terminal includes the installation of fuel lines, drainage and lighting. The contract for the columns to light the aircraft gates was put out to tender with CSP winning the supply.

“The columns were designed and built to strict specifications for this project,” said Sue Walker, Marketing and Export Engineer, CSP. “We are fortunate that we’ve been able to utilise the services of Valmont Industries Inc, the largest column manufacturer in the world, with whom we have an association. The columns were purpose built offshore to international standards so that we were able to include the latest motorised lowering system into the design.”

The new columns are a first for New Zealand and incorporate a new state-of-the-art, high mast, motorised lowering system, which allows the lighting to be maintained at ground level, avoiding the need for maintenance staff to work at height. The system is the most effective lighting facility for intense lighting of large-scale areas.

Mainzeal Property and Construction are approximately half way through the hardstand development. The columns at gates 28 and 29 were installed in March using a 50 tonne crane. The columns for gates 26 and 27 are due to be installed in June.
