Lighting up the Twin Coast Discovery Highway

The Twin Coast Discovery Highway will be even brighter as it passes through Whangarei City thanks to a lighting upgrade undertaken by Currie Electrical on behalf of Whangarei District Council. The upgrade has included the installation of new LED lighting units along with a number of CSP’s Oclyte® Streetlight Columns – to improve safety.

The Twin Coast Discovery Route is a picturesque 800km circular route of Northland which heads up the east coast via SH1 from Whangarei, through Kawakawa and then onto SH10 through Kerikeri, before reconnecting with SH1 right up to Cape Reinga at the top of the North Island.

The lighting upgrade is part of an overall project to convert all of the streetlights in the Whangarei District to LEDs with the aim of reducing power and maintenance costs whilst providing a better quality of light. Tourism is a big part of Northland’s economy and, by improving the lighting along the Twin Coast Discovery Route, travel will be made safer and easier for visitors and locals.

“We were contracted by WDC to upgrade lighting with 322 luminaires between Otaika Road on SH1 thru to Paramount Parade, Tikipunga,” says Brett Currie, Director of Currie Electrical. “This involved replacing 322 existing luminaires with Italo LED luminaires and adding an extra 121 streetlight columns using CSP’s Oclyte® Streetlight Columns. The contract was completed within the 100 day time frame highlighting the importance of product supply timelines.”

“There wasn't anything overly difficult about the supply of these columns although some additional work was required to engineer shorter foundations, however it was a large project and one we think will really improve the safety of some of our picturesque roads in the north making them safer for visitors to our country – particularly those not used to driving on undivided and, in lots of cases, winding roads,” says Lawrence Amos, Sales Engineer - Poles Northern Region for CSP.
