Hire team pull out all the stops

The Auckland Harbour Bridge is an iconic structure that provides a lifeline for people, goods and services connecting the North Shore with central Auckland and has been a key feature of the harbour landscape since it first opened in 1959.

The bridge is one of the busiest sections of motorway in Auckland, with an average of 160,000 vehicles using it daily, making the coordination for closing two northbound lanes of the eight lanes of the bridge for resurfacing work a tricky task. But with the help of CSP’s Barrier Hire team the disruption to Auckland’s commuters was kept to a minimum.

“During the Christmas and New Year Holidays there are significantly less people using the bridge and the roads are generally less wet - although the weather wasn’t very kind to us this year,” says Jared Stickland, Traffic Management Supervisor for AMA. “The first installation of safety barrier, to create a workzone to carry out the resurfacing work, was originally scheduled to begin on 11 December but we lost a week due to bad weather. Richard from CSP and his team were great as we cancelled on them with a few hours notice because of weather. But they came back the following week on 19 December and then again on Christmas night for the second part of the installation.”

“The window to install the 1.3kms of ArmorZone TL-2 and TL-1 Plastic Barrier was very small so we had to ensure that everything we needed was on site and there would be no hold ups,” says Richard Pitovao, Barrier Hire Supervisor for CSP. “This included 18,000 litres of water in 4 trucks to fill the barriers, 19 staff, forklfts, a cartage company plus we had to make sure all the barrier was already at the AMA’s storage yard on the north side of the bridge.”

“Richard and his team made it so easy for us - they took care of everything in relation to the installation of the barrier and managed to get it all installed in the small timeframe we gave them and without any injuries,” adds Jared. “They really did pull out all the stops and Richard gave 100% on this project plus he helped me out with a couple of extra things. The un-install went just as well - it was a great effort. I can’t speak more highly of the effort Richard and his team made. I would certainly have them back next year and on any other temporary traffic management job we needed to do. They are certainly a professional outfit.”
